He was initially held in the basement of Vocational School No. 17 in Henichesk before being remanded in custody in Crimea. A criminal case was initiated against him on charges of participation in an illegal armed formation due to his alleged involvement with the Noman Chelebidzhikhan Crimean Tatar Volunteer Battalion, an organisation whose participation in any combat operations has not been proven. During the trial, Tereshchenko stated that he had not been a member of the Chelebidzhikhan Battalion, but rather of a formation called "Asker"; he had been there for approximately one and a half months, had not signed an official contract, and had performed only manual labour, leaving the formation because he had not been paid his promised salary. On 2 December 2022, Tereshchenko was sentenced to four years and three months in a strict-regime penal colony.
