The Nagatinsky District Court of Moscow has registered a criminal case for spreading military “fake news” (point “d” of part 2 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code) against journalist Nikolai Levshits. Mediazona drew attention to the case file. The exact reason for initiating the criminal case is not yet known.
- Levshits runs the Telegram channel “Pro Georgia” about life in the country, local news, and events. Around 119,000 people subscribe to it.
- Previously, Levshits worked at Open Russia and was a staff member at Alexei Navalny’s central headquarters.
- A Moscow court has arrested Levshits in absentia for two months from the moment of his extradition or detention in Russia. In July, the journalist was added to Rosfinmonitoring’s list of “terrorists and extremists.”
- In March 2025, the Ministry of Justice labelled Levshits as a “foreign agent.” The agency explained this by saying he had spoken out against the war in Ukraine, spread “fake news” about the Russian authorities, and taken part in preparing materials for other “foreign agents.”
