Political prisoner Dmitry Lyamin has been sentenced to 17 years for conversations in the penal colony

The 2nd Western District Military Court has sentenced Dmitry Lyamin to 17 years in prison on charges of involvement in terrorist activities (part 1.1, Article 205.1 of the Criminal Code) and high treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code). RusNews reports this citing the Telegram channel ‘Prison Lawyer.’ The prosecutor had asked for a life sentence for Lyamin.

The case was based on conversations Lyamin had with another convict in the penal colony. Investigators claimed he tried to persuade his cellmate to join organisations banned in Russia.

In April 2023 Lyamin was sentenced to eight years in prison in a case over an alleged attempt to set fire to a military recruitment office in Shuya, a city in the Ivanovo region northeast of Moscow. He denied the charges. Taking this previous conviction into account, Lyamin has been handed a total sentence of 22 years in prison.

In March 2024 the project ‘Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial’ recognised Lyamin as a political prisoner.
