The Dubna City Court in Moscow region has imposed a fine of 300,000 rubles (approximately US$3,250) on 73-year-old physicist Dmitry Kazakov, reports Mediazona.
He was found guilty of financing an extremist organisation (part 1, article 282.3 of the Criminal Code) because of two transfers of 500 rubles (US$5.50) each in support of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. The verdict was issued in July, but it has only now come to light.
The case was initiated after a letter from the FSB marked “secret,” which mentioned the scientist’s “possible involvement” in financing the Anti-Corruption Foundation. The information was passed to local police. Then officers from the Centre for Combating Extremism made requests to banks and obtained statements which showed transfers to an account linked to the foundation.
The court ruling mentions an email address through which Kazakov is believed to have received a message asking for donations. Mediazona noted that this address is associated with the well-known physicist Dmitry Kazakov—a specialist in quantum field theory and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2022, he received the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, Second Class.
When determining the punishment, the court took into account his elderly age, health, and scientific achievements. Kazakov has not been added to the Rosfinmonitoring list of “extremists and terrorists.”
